Dealing with Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS)

Respirable Crystalline Silica is deadly. The dust produced during stone cutting or dealing with rock or sand based products can produce fine dusts and powders which penetrate deep in to the lungs and can cause severe lung diseases and premature death.

For those cutting materials which contain this deadly substance, the risk is often unidentified. Simple actions such as brushing down clothing or sweeping up, can cause elevated levels of RCS in the air which are unacceptable. The current limit imposed by the HSE (0.1mg/m3) refers to those particles which, using suitable measuring equipment, are deemed of a suitable aerodynamic diameter to pass deep into the lungs and cause long term problems.

Prevention of dust during production is the primary control by using techniques such as wet cutting and polishing, but this still leaves a residue which when dry, may become airborne and cause problems. Where dust is still generated then LEV, air-fed masks, suitable clothing and cleaning procedures are essential.
